A bill to exempt Israeli yeshiva students from mandatory military service was rejected in the Knesset.Liberal lawmaker Yossi Beilin submitted the legislation Wednesday, arguing that the current system in which yeshiva students are deferred from national service as long as they are in studies, encourages tens of thousands of able-bodied men to stay out of the workforce. The bill was defeated, 26-3.
