Israel has reinforced troops stationed in the Golan
Heights, the chief of staff said. Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi told the
Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Wednesday that as a precaution
against a confrontation with Syria, Israel’s garrison on the Golan was boosted recently. Ashkenazi said there is no indication of a planned Syrian
attack but that Damascus has been upgrading its armed forces.
Turning to the Gaza Strip, Ashkenazi noted the military buildup of the governing
Palestinian faction Hamas and hinted that a large-scale Israeli response could
be in order. “We shall have to come up with a solution,” he was quoted as
telling lawmakers.
