A
Jewish congresswoman joined a Jewish Senate colleague in introducing
legislation to end backdoor combat jet parts sales to Iran.
Rep.
Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) said Thursday her bill to bar the sales of F-14
jets parts would be her first; Giffords is a freshman elected in November.
It
would be the U.S. House of Representatives version of a bill introduced by Sen.
Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) in January.
“I hope that this legislation is just one step in
what will be many to be able to keep better control over our equipment and to
make sure that we are not helping to militarize the Iranians,” she said.
Iran is the only country to maintain F-14 “Tomcats” in its force;
investigations have uncovered third parties who relay to Iran parts sold at
surplus sales.
