German Nobel Prize winner Gunther Grass admitted he was a member of the Waffen SS at the end of World War II. Grass told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper he never actually saw military action, but ended up behind the Russian front on reconnaissance patrols, witnessing what he described as gruesome scenes and surviving by pure chance.
