A former Israeli Cabinet minister was indicted for drug smuggling. Gonen Segev, who served as energy minister in the early 1990s, was charged in Tel Aviv District Court on Sunday with conspiracy to smuggle 25,000 ecstasy tablets into Israel from the Netherlands. Two alleged accomplices also were named in the indictment. Segev, who denies the charges, was arrested last month on suspicion of stowing the drugs in Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport after failing to board a Tel Aviv-bound flight with them. According to prosecutors, he used a forged diplomatic passport in a botched bid to shield his bag from inspection.
