A fervently Orthodox organization is pressing New York legislators to oppose a state gay rights bill on the grounds that it will “undermine religious freedom and convey an inappropriate social message.” Agudath Israel of America is arguing that an ongoing lawsuit against Yeshiva University — accusing the Orthodox-run institution of violating city anti-discrimination laws by barring gay couples from married-student housing — has “potentially staggering” implications for religious organizations.
