Prof. Leonard Fein of Brandeis University told 120 members of the Board of Trustees of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations at their semi-annual national meeting here that one-third of all Jews who marry today take a non-Jewish mate, that the Jewish divorce rate now equals that of the population at large — 38 percent of all first marriages fail — and that the Jewish birthrate of approximately 1.4 children per family is below the national average of 1.7 and below the replacement level.
