Sobel Named Top Marine Corps Chaplain

Samuel Sobel, U.S. Navy, has been named the Senior Chaplain of the U.S. Marine Corps, it was announced by Rear Admiral Francis L. Garrett, chairman of the Armed Forces Chaplains Board, at the Board of Directors meeting of the National Jewish Welfare Board (JWB). He becomes the first Jewish chaplain to be accorded this honor. He will be responsible for the supervision of 200 chaplains of all faiths in the Marines. Chaplain Sobel served as executive director of the Armed Forces Chaplains Board and received the Legion of Merit Medal for “exceptionally meritorious service” in this capacity. At Norfolk, he was instrumental in having the Jewish Chapel on the base rebuilt and named the Commodore Uriah P. Levy Chapel, the first permanent synagogue under military auspices.
