A water desalting plant will start operations shortly at Nahal Yam, a para-military settlement established on the northern Sinai coast near the Bardawil lagoon. The settlers are engaged in fishing. The Jewish Agency’s settlement department ordered construction of the plant to provide the settlement with fresh water for domestic uses and irrigation. The plant will operate on the principle invented by Alexander Zarchin, a Russian-born Israeli engineer who holds more than 20 patents for the desalination of sea water.
