Hadassah today expressed confidence that the U. S. Congress will implement “swiftly” President Lyndon B. Johnson’s recommendations for the revision of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, known as the McCarran-Walter law. President Johnson specifically called for the elimination of the national origins quota system from this law.
In a telegram to President Johnson, commending his message to Congress on immigration, Mrs. Mortimer Jacobson, national president of Hadassah, said: “Hadassah, representing more than 300,000 American Jewish women, applauds your message to Congress calling for revision of our immigration law to eliminate the national origins quota system. Hadassah has long been on record favoring the removal of the defects and inequities of the current act as a means of eliminating resentment, discrimination and injustice from our immigration laws. We join with you in urging Congress to formulate for the American people and the people of the world a generous, Just and democratic solution to this urgent problem.”
