Yiddish language, literature, and folklore will be the topics of a three-day international Conference on Yiddish Studies opening tomorrow at Columbia University’s Earl Hall. Scholars from Israel. England, Holland, Switzerland, and Argentina as well as from the United States will present papers on various aspects of Yiddish studies during the eight sessions of the Conference, which is sponsored by Columbia, the Yivo Institute for Jewish Research, the College of the City of New York, and the Hebrew University at Jerusalem.
Purpose of the conference, in preparation for two years, is to enable scholars to share the results of their recent work and jointly to map plans for their future research. Dr. John A. Krout, vice president and provost of Columbia University, will deliver greetings from the University. Representatives of the other sponsors who will greet the conference are: Dr. Sol Liptzin, chairman, Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages, College of the City of New York; Dr. S. D. Goitein, professor of Islamics, Hebrew University; and Leibush Lehrer, chairman, Commission on Research, Yivo Institute for Jewish Research.
