The remains of Dr. Pinkhos Churgin, president of Bar-Ilan University in Israel who died here last Thursday while visiting the United States for medical treatment, were flown last night by El Al plane to Israel for burial Hundreds of Orthodox Jews came to Idlewild Airport for a funeral service prior to the plane’s departure.
Dr. Churgin was a long-time leader of religious Jewry in the United States Born in 1894 in Russia, he was educated in that country and at Yale University. He was a former national president of the Mizrachi Organization of America and the dean of Teachers Institute of Yeshiva University. Dr. Churgin was a leading scholar in the fields of philosophy and history and editor of several Hebrew-language publications. He was named president of Bar-Ilan University in 1952.
