Governor Huender of Surinam, Dutch Guiana, notified the Freeland League for Jewish Territorial Colonization and the Legislative Council of Surinam that he is suspending the discussions on immigration of Jews into is territory, it was learned here today.
Mrs. Ida M. Silverman of Providence, Rhode Island, a long-time opponent of the Freeland League, made public the text of a letter addressed by Governor Huender to the Freeland League on August 14. It reads:
“Referring to my predecessors’ letter of December 4, 1947, No. 5008, I have the honor to communicate that the legislative body of Surinam (Staten) now have thought fit to reconsider the matter of colonization of Jews into Surinam in the light of the present international situation.
“After due and profound consideration the Staten–pending the total clarification of the general international situation–prefer to suspend the discussions with your organization on immigration of Jews into Surinam.”
At the New York headquarters of the Freeland League it was confirmed that such a communication had been received. Dr. I.N. Steinberg, the head of the League, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he will issue a statement concerning Governor Huender’s letter.
