Hitlerism was assailed by three speakers before Milwaukee organizations this week.
At a meeting of Omicron Alpha Tau fraternity of Marquette University Dr. Major L. Younce, professor of history and political science at Marquette, declared the working classes of Germany were duped into supporting the Nazi movement by a “skillful camouflage of radicalism.”
The Nazi antagonism to traditional religions indicated a psychopathic condition, he said, suggesting that Jewish organizations petition the Department of State to take an active stand against persecution of Jews in Germany.
Answering Nazi charges that Jews did not furnish their due quota of soldiers during the War, Professor Younce declared that “if docility to leading oneself to senseless slaughter be considered a virtue, your people in Germany made enough of a sacrifice.”
In an address to the College Women’s club Dr. Esther Caulkin Brunauer, research chairman in international relations of the American Association of University Women, predicted that Germany would rapidly lose her place in the drama, arts and science as a result of Nazi philosophy.
Hitlerism was also condemned by the Rev. Ralph Compere, pastor of the People’s church, in an address to the Pioneer Women for Palestine. American democracy will prove a weak barrier against fascism, Compere warned, citing the past growth of the Ku Klux Klan.
