Comment to Red Cross report: Gazans 'in despair'

THIS QUOTE BELOW IS VERY TELLING. IN FACT, ISRAEL WAS VERY LIBERAL IN ALLOWING PRISON VISITS, ETC. UNTIL THEY RECENTLY SAW HOW CRUEL HAMAS/GAZANS WERE TREATING THE SHALIT SITUATION, WITH ABSOLUTELY NO HELP FROM THE IRC.
REMEMBER, TOO, THAT FOR MANY DECADES THE IRC ALLOWED THE "RED CRESCENT" AS A MEMBER BUT FORBADE THE "MAGEN DAVID."

"The report rapped Israel for stopping Red Cross-facilitated visits with their relatives in Israeli prisons, though it made no mention of the fact that Hamas has refused to allow any contact between captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and either the Red Cross or his family. Shalit has been held in Gaza for three years since being abducted in a cross-border raid."

I agree that sinking it is not a good idea. However, this melodramatic "supply" is bogus and perpetuates the lie that the people of Gaza are starving and dying of disease left and right. Adequate medical supplies, food, necessities are regularly delivered. If there was real mass starvation or and epidemic you can be sure it would be widely broadcast. The false cries of "genocide" are the sounds of hatred and opportunism.

The "Professor" didn't question Israel's policies, he browbeat students and violated academic principles. Some people seem to think that there is no boundary to their conduct if it is anti-Israel, and if anyone complains, they claim they are being unfairly accused of antisemitism.

There were heavy AA batteries guarding the death camps? News to me. George McGovern was a US B-24 pilot in WWII. He has commented that he basically passed over the camps to and from other missions, but never got the orders to bomb the camps (forget the tracks, destroy the camps.)
I don't see that anyone has let the anti-immigration Repubs. off the hook, or Stalin. But the leaders of the free world surely could have done more.

The US State Dept. and intelligence community has a long and sorry streak of antisemitism. This was a put up job to begin with, using some 90 year old World War One law that had not bee used before against legal activities by a couple of lobbyists. The recent hit job on Congresswoman Harman, as norman glaser points out, only adds fuel to the smears. Predictably, there are comments here and elsewhere about how "Jewish power" got these "spies" off the hook. From what I can tell, it is the opposite. If they hadn't been working for AIPAC, their conduct would not have bothered anyone.

Uh, Tony Blair is the "neutral" mediator for the Middle East?
The idea that Arab passengers need to be shielded from a map showing Israel is remarkable. Do Jewish/Israeli passengers get maps that show Judea and Samaria? Or how about the West Bank as part of TransJordan and Gaza as part of Egypt. I mean, if we want maps to reflect how we WANT the world to be, not how it really is....

As bad as this is, it isn't the first time I have heard of creative map making. I recall about 20 years ago, a chain of upscale stores (and catalog sales - pre-internet) based in the US call The Sharper Image offered a map or a globe without Israel being identified as Israel. Incredibly, the
founder and owner of The Sharper Image was a Jew!

Mr. Edwards,
I can't understand why you would ever have the impression I was an anti-semite. Maybe my sarcasm fell flat.
I do try to be even handed, but that doesn't mean I think there is a "cycle of violence" or that there is "equivalence" between Israel's self defense and Arab terror.
I have visited Sderot, and saw first hand not only the proximity of danger, but the spirit of the residents. I am a long time AIPAC member, adult Bar Mitzvah, and believe that the sustaining of the State of Israel is crucial to not only the Jewish community, but to the world community.

Look, this father had a tremendous loss, and was a good guy from the start. But he was repeatedly warned to leave his house, and did not. His support for peace, before and after this tragedy, is admirable. But it hasn't been so influential on the world or the region. I don't see what he has done to qualify him for a Nobel Peace prize.

BTW, I did not read Ross Kaplan's comment as equating the accidental killing with a Palestinian terror attack.

Neuroshock, sure there a few fanatics in Israel, but Israeli TV isn't saturated with programs, including for young children, demonizing the "Jews" and calling for their murder as a religious imperative. Check out this one, where Hamas has actors dress up as Jews who say things like we have to wash our hands in Muslim blood. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=28f_1239013651

Comment to Abbas: No negotiations until two states accepted

Abbas seems to think the "roadmap" is one-way. He'll do nothing to fulfill his part of the agenda, but blame Israel for not doing its part, which was conditioned on the PA stopping terror and incitement, etc.
That said, I agree that for tactical reasons at a minimum, it is time to stop expanding the settlements and at least reduce them.
The settlers removed from Gaza shouldn't be living in trailer parks, but that's the fault of the Israeli government.

Comment to U.N. rights council passes religious defamation resolution

" ...the adopted text said. "Islam is frequently and wrongly associated with human rights violations and terrorism." "

"Wrongly???" That's pretty impressive.

I guess it depends on what you call a humans rights violation. For example, driving a car (if you are female), or having your adult nephew get you some bread and bring it to your home (if you are female), which are relatively mild examples of what is a criminal violation in Saudi Arabia. I won't get into honor killings.

And then there is "terrorism," which again implies quite a special definition. Flying planes into civilian buildings, suicide/homicide bombers, rocket attacks on civilians, are just what? Oh yeah, "resistance."

As to religious defamation, do the countries that support this resolution intend to stop calling Jews pigs and apes?

Comment to A Jewish blood libel?

There is far from solid evidence of misconduct by IDF soldiers. Some of what has been reported is that a woman and her child mistakenly turned the wrong way when leaving a house, and so were, sadly, shot and killed. This was in a war zone, where woman have been suicide/homicide bombers, etc. This is not a war crime.
There are some second hand reports of some soldiers being excited about doing their jobs. Sure it would be better if each and every one of these mostly 19-20 year olds could be reflective and philosophical about the tragedy of war. Being caught up in the emotions of combat, fear for one's life (booby trapped houses, sniper fire, etc.) is not a war crime.
There is substantial evidence of Hamas' entire policy and practice as being, basically a "war crime." Civilian shields, civilian targets, etc. This isn't just "misconduct" it is a campaign of hate and destruction. Let's remember this is the response to Israel LEAVING Gaza.
Finally, of course Israel should investigate any misconduct, as they usually do. When is the last time you saw any Palestinian or Arab country investigate anything? Let's put this in perspective.

Comment to Jewish theater director in D.C. defends reading of anti-Israel play

Mr Hicks, all I said was that the play was titled "Jewish" children, not "Israeli" children. Your comment doesn't address that at all, but only talks about the "behaviour" of Israelis. My point was directed at the idea that criticism of Israel is not necessarily anti-Jewish, which is true. However some criticism of Israel is anti-Jewish, and Caryl Churchill makes no bones about it.
As to the rest, let me say that you can't judge the behavior of Israel in a vacuum, it must be in the context of the threats they have and continue to face. The Arab boycott continues; for crying out loud they won't let a tennis player in Dubai!
As to the occupied territories, most of them will be "returned" (in quotes because to return them would mean to Egypt and Jordan) if and when that means a step towards peace and security, not a bigger launching pad for terrorism (bombers, missiles) and a bigger breeding ground of incitement and hatred (Martyr Mouse television show for kids, and Hamas imposing Sharia "law" etc.).

There are some second hand reports of alleged mistakes and maybe even some misconduct by a very few. The war crimes by Hamas are well documented, and in fact not at all denied by Hamas.
I agree with you about the importance of stopping the rockets. I think that simply goes back to Hamas (and its sponsors). They are clearly able to stop or start the attacks.
As to the rest of the mess, yeah I'm not a big fan of Bibi or Barak, but it looks like Netanyahu has brought into his government two key players who favor a two-state solution. That doesn't sound like a hard-line right wing stance.

Comment to Op-Ed: Hillary Clinton's troubling transformation

Why do people post on JTA if all they have to say is one-sided and inaccurate criticism of Israel? I find it hard to believe these are anything but trolls.
In fact, Israel is fighting for its life, and Hillary (French Kiss) Clinton is the sham some of us were worried she was. She just takes on poses.
I happen to favor a two state solution, and a viable Palestinian state, but I don't see how that can happen when Hamas indoctrinates little kids with TV shows like Martyr Mouse, and spends its resources on building rockets and suicide vests, rather than a real economy. Their imposition of Sharia "law" was certainly not voted for in Gaza, and their essentially martial law is hardly in keeping with any "international law."
Yes, yes, Israel is not perfect, and I disagree with many of its policies and tactics. The semi-blockade of Gaza is a bad idea, in my opinion, as is bull dozing homes of terrorists' families (if that is still happening).
But there has to be some context.
The article was about Clinton, and by extension the Obama policy. I supported Obama, and still do, but some recent moves have given me pause.

But I think the tactic of taking land and otherwise trying to pressure the general population of Gaza (like bulldozing houses) has not and will not work. It is exactly what Hamas wants, because the people don't get the linkage, or don't think it's justified.
Continued pressure on the world community, and attacking the smuggling tunnels to show Israel will do something plays out much better.

Well, I guess the Jewish community can't do anything to help anyone without being accused of it being a transparent cynical ploy. Tell that to the people in Darfur, maybe they'll ask the synagogues and Rabbis to stop speaking out, etc..

I didn't say legitimate criticism of Israel should be replaced by addressing the actual genocides elsewhere (Congo, et al), but it is curious when some people care only about suffering caused by Israel's mis-deeds (real and imagined) but lose interest in other suffering.

So much (not all) of the recent protests against Israel's attack on Gaza were patently anti-Jew (antisemitic)--not anti-Israel. There is no other way to interpret epithets like "go back to the ovens," and signs blaming "Jews" (or "Juice" - I didn't make that up), or even caricature face masks (hook nose) eating babies (dolls) which was photographed in London.

Guess what else? Israel is NOT the only country/people getting substantial US and Western aid. Try Egypt and Jordan for relevant starters get direct US $$$. Egypt is a dictatorship. Jordan is ruled not by democracy and not by majority. Neither is treating the Palestinians very well, and neither wants to take back the West Bank or Gaza that they controlled until 1967.

Saudi Arabia gets a form of aid through cartel inflated oil prices (and buys huge weaponry stocks, but keeps the culture, especially the women, quite repressed.)

So yeah, I think Israel deserves a little Valentine love. You don't have to be perfect to be loved. Who is?

Comment to Giving Jews some much-needed love on Valentine's Day

Israel shall survive and flourish.
Hey Miriam, look around. There are far worse parts of the world, with actual genocide today. But those you can only focus on Israel/Jews don't care about suffering in Sudan/Darfur, Congo, China/Tibet, etc. Many don't care about suffering by Arabs and Palestinians unless allegedly at the hands of Israel (Jews). This trivializes the suffering of others and drowns out the legitimate points of criticism of the actions of the State of Israel.
You're right, Never Again is inclusive. Have you failed to notice the country-wide/world wide Jewish call to conscience in Darfur? I haven't seen anything like that from mosques.

What is this Rabbi talking about? This is irrational blame the victim stuff spouted usually by the deniers or minimizers of the Holocaust.
I do agree that anger may not be the best reaction, and the expectation that the Vatican will fix its error is a good first response. That assumes that the Catholic Church is capable of managing its billion or so membership and organization.

Comment to Did Israel win the war against Hamas?

to Fernando:
It's not clear if the Hamas tactics of civilian shields, and hiding behind and under mosques, hospitals and white flags was successful in inducing enough terrible loss of civilian life to make a rational analysis impossible.
However, in no way does Israel want the people of Gaza to leave. Please remember that none of the Arab countries wants the Palestinians; not Egypt, not Jordan, not Lebanon. In fact, the West Bank doesn't want those in Gaza. Israel sure doesn't want 1.5m additional Arabs in Israel.
My take is that Israel didn't prefer the destruction, but to counter the Hamas strategy and limit the casualties to the IDF, it destroyed a lot more property than it wanted to initially. At this point, Israel wants Gaza rebuilt with involvement of Egypt, and some of the Western countries, and of course the PA. Maybe the hope of a peaceful and prosperous Gaza can be revived.

I think Jon Stewart is usually right on, and he is influential. I am very disappointed with this move on his part, and his recent comments about the supposed power of Aipac/lobby to prevent any criticism of Israel in US politics. Stewart is out front as being Jewish, which I like, but not when he turns it into yet another "Jew against Israel's "over-reaction" voice.
Ken Price quite succinctly recites some of the key facts showing the ignorance of Stewart.

Comment to Reform backs same-sex marriage ban challenge

Mr. Walk raises a good question that is not given much attention in the Reform and perhaps the larger Jewish community. It deserves analysis.
There is really nothing "Jewish" about the gay marriage issue, and certainly nothing in Jewish law or tradition that supports the attack on natural/traditional definition of marriage and family.
Typically, the rationale cited for this and other political and social causes is "justice" or "tikkun olam." Sometimes it's relatively clear: Darfur seems to be a good example. There is no conflict between Jewish law and custom and trying to stop genocide and basic human sufferering.
But this general concept is stretched in whatever direction someone wants. Some Jews cite "tikkun olam" as a basis for opposing what I consider to be the right of the State of Israel to exist, and to defend itself.
Mr. Walk's distinction between what is appropriate for Jewish political organizations as distinct from Jewish religious organizations makes sense to me.

Channi, I agree with your comments about Hamas' illegal terror tactics, but I can't agree that there are no civilians in Gaza. Hamas was elected in parliament (not the executive) on a minority vote because Fatah/PA ran too many candidates and was known for corruption. Hamas then took over Gaza by force, and has refused to use its resources to better the lives of the many people there. Sure, plenty may sympathize with Hamas, especially with the constant demonization of Israel (Martyr Mouse tv for kids) but most would not take up violence, and would only want to live their lives in peace.

Ben Calo: You must be referring to what the USA did to the Native Americans. I guess you would approve if the NA's strapped on bomb vests and blew up pizza parlors in Cleveland or Atlanta. As for ethnic cleansing, that's what the Arab states have done. No or only a remnant of Jews left. And they're pushing the Christians out. A million Arabs are Israeli citizens. How many Jews could safely live in "Palestine"?
By the way, why are you on JTA? Just to spew?

The UN has been part of the problem, always blaming Israel and not stopping Hamas from using it as one of the civilian "shields." It is certainly a problem of appearance, but I hope Israel will continue to educate anyone who is willing to listen. From what I have seen, Israel has been willing to allow assistance to the wounded. I believe the policy of imposing a "diet" on Gaza is counterproductive, but it is far from genocide. And let's remember that Hamas has had no problem supplying itself with munitions and other weapons, but not medicine and food for the people it controls.

I'm no fan of Iran, but getting to all their nuclear sites may be beyond the capacity of Israel. This isn't Iraq of decades ago. The sites are spread out and fortified/underground. I'm not sure Israel even knows where all of them are.

Comment to Hamas posters posted at U.S. synagogues

Jews are being killed in various countries, regardless of whether they have any political affiliation, and might even be among the Jewish "pro-Palestinian" contingent. Jewish institutions are the target of Arab hate. But if we say that antisemitism is even a part of the motivation of the anti-Israel conduct and speech, the response is that we are playing the "race card."
Even when Jonnie Cochran got OJ Simpson off with a bogus claim of racism, it didn't mean there was no racism in the US anymore.

Comment to Gaza, the fridge in Gilo and moral responsibility

Very thoughtful piece. I support Israel, imperfect as it is, and the unique "standard" to which it is supposed to adhere is manifestly unfair. Yet as the author points out, some of these tactics have never worked. The "sanctions/embargo" needs to be substantially loosened. The general population of Gaza, having been fed only one side of the story for decades, will never blame Hamas for shortages of life's basic necessities. What's the point?

Hey, about that "full humanitarian access" -- what about some Red Cross access to Galil Shalit? Even the worst child murderers and terrorists in Israeli jails have contact with the Red Cross and their families. Hamas, instead, hides Shalit and recently mocked him in one of its public demonstrations.

I can't agree. That's shouldn't be the goal and it will never happen. And god help us if we accomplished it.
Be strong, and show our enemies that peaceful conduct is the only option. Maybe some hearts and minds will change, too.

Gee, isn't this a "disproportionate response"? Besides being a completely illogical one, as the first comment shows.
