Let's start by hammering this out: "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." "The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Muslim generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. " "There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors." (from the Hamas Charter; and it gets worse)

You like polls. Let's compromise on the 'settlements': Israel stops expanding 'settlements' when reliable polls show that 99% of Muslim Arabs in the disputed territories and Israel itself a) agree that Israel, as a Jewish state, has the right to exist b) renounce violence as a method to redress perceived grievances against Israel c) renounce the Hamas charter d) renounce the Fateh charter and that poll includes Muslim Arab children at least 5 years old, since they already have opinions. OK - make it 90%. OK make it 75%. OK, make it 60%. What number makes Israel's existence safe, and an n-state solution viable? OK, just kidding - this is unrealistic - let's compromise - 'settlements' stop when anitisemitism and non-existence of Israel teaching is 100% removed from Palestinian schools, TV and other media. Even if it's true that the West Bank and Gaza governments really can't control overt violence, they can control the propaganda and school curriculum.

I have to disagree with Haim. I was a creature of the anti-Vietnam war 60s, and I despised the FBI at that time for their infiltration and harassment into the peace movement. But this guy was not provoking and informing on peaceniks - he provoked and informed on Jew-hating potential mass murderers. I'm glad that these guys are off the streets and I hope that they are kept off. Not everyone is provokable to commit murder, and if Maqsood was able to set them up to commit hateful murder, so could real Jihadists with real explosives. Unsavory as this business is, despite his shady past, Maqsood acted heroically; very likely saved lives - please don't throw your mother under the bus. Of course keep a wary eye on government security services, but they deserve more than blanket abomination, especially this time. Comment to Bonnie: Sorry about Hatikva, but hope indeed is scarce. The quotations you read above are real, they are ancient and they aren't going away. Belief in them and consequent behaviors are not likely to be extinguished, as Jews and Christians have over time been able to extinguish behaviors that emanated from certain of their holy texts. If that's not depressing enough, here's a recent comment from an Egyptian imam, part of which you read above. From Egyptian cleric Muhammad Hussein Ya’qoub, aired on Al-Rahma TV, January 17, 2009: “Your belief regarding the Jews should be, first, that they are infidels, and second, that they are enemies. They are enemies not because they occupied Palestine. They would have been enemies even if they did not occupy a thing. …We must believe that our fighting with the Jews is eternal, and it will not end until the final battle... You must believe that we will fight, defeat, and annihilate them, until not a single Jew remains on the face of the Earth. It is not me who says so. The Prophet said: “Judgment Day will not come until you fight the Jews and kill them. The Jews will hide behind stones and trees, and the stones and tree will call: Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him ...” These are the words of an Egyptian cleric on Egyptian television - not some poor, no-hope dead-end guy. He's educated, a scholar, knows his theology, has a following, has backing from the government of Egypt. He's not an aberration. No one can change his outlook or negotiate with him. Sorry.
