First chaplains Torah displayed at GA

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A Jewish chaplains group is writing six small Torah scrolls that can easily travel with chaplains to war zones.

The JWB Jewish Chaplains Council says the lightweight, fully kosher Torahs will supplement the 60 Torahs that are at bases around the world but are too large for a chaplain to carry.

The first of the six, not yet finished, was escorted to the stage of the Jewish Federations of North America's General Assembly Tuesday by an honor guard of Jewish service personnel.

The Chaplains Council said there are more than 10,000 Jewish men and women currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. Six Jewish service members have been killed in action in the past 12 months, the council said.
