Israel allows cattle into Gaza

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel is allowing thousands of cattle to enter the Gaza Strip.

The 3,000 cattle began crossing into Gaza through border crossings with Israel last week as part of a goodwill gesture in honor of a major Muslim holiday that will be celebrated later this month. Feasts of lamb and beef are traditionally held on that day.

Wheat and animal feed, as well as humanitarian aid, also crossed into Gaza, according to reports.

Livestock has been brought into Gaza through smuggling tunnels originating in Egypt since Israel imposed a blockade on Gaza in June 2007 after Hamas came to power.
