Ruth Brin, Reform liturgist, dies

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Ruth Brin, a Reform Jewish leader who modernized traditional Jewish prayers and texts, has died at age 88.

Brin produced countless liturgical interpretations including four books of poetry and prayers, five worship services, children’s books and historical articles. Today almost every Reform or Conservative siddur is said to contain at least one or more of her works.

She described her own work as “a personal search for the ultimate reality, the wonder, the mystery, the meaning that most of us call God,” according to the Jewish Women’s Archive’s Website.

Mordecai Specktor, publisher and editor of The American Jewish World, said he felt privileged to work with Brin, whom he considered to be “a dear friend.”

Brin died following a heart attack.
