Egypt arrests 26 planning Suez attacks

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Egypt arrested 26 alleged al-Qaida operatives accused of plotting attacks on foreign ships sailing through the Suez Canal.

The 25 Egyptians and one Palestinian were in contact with al-Qaida's Islamic Army of Palestine, Egypt's Interior Ministry told journalists.

The cell had prepared mobile-phone remote-controlled detonators and explosives reportedly found in the Sinai Desert left over from wars with Israel, according to the French news agency AFP.

The suspects admitted to funding their activities through contributions from Islamic charities around the world, the Associated Press reported.
