PrintStay of deportation denied for accused Nazi
NEW YORK (JTA) -- A U.S. appeals court denied a stay of deportation for accused Nazi prison guard John Demjanjuk.
Pending further appeals, the ruling Friday by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Ohio opens to the door for the 89-year-old Demjanjuk's deportation to Germany, where he will stand trial for charges related to his alleged stint as a guard at the Sobibor death camp. Demnjanjuk denies he was a guard at the camp.
Demjanjuk claimed that he was too sick to be deported, but the court rejected that claim.
In 1988, Demjanjuk was sentenced to death in Israel after survivors identified him as the notorious Treblinka guard known as "Ivan the Terrible," a conviction that Israel's high court later overturned.
