O.U. to address economic crisis on day schools

NEW YORK (JTA) -- The Orthodox Union is convening leaders from Orthodox Jewish day schools and yeshivas to address the economic crisis and its effect on the day school system.

Day schools and yeshivas are facing a budgetary crisis with the serious financial hits on major donors and as parents struggle to pay tuition.

Tuesday night's meeting at the O.U.'s Manhattan headquarters will include more than 40 representatives from day schools and yeshivas in the New York metropolitan area, as well as several others from across the country who will attend via teleconference. They will detail the situation and attempt to come up with solutions.

The meeting will feature presentations by Josh Elkin, the executive director of the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education; Martin Schloss, the director of the division of day school services of the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater New York; Moshe Bane, the chairman of the board of governors of the Orthodox Union; and the leadership of the Avi Chai Foundation, which provides substantial support to Jewish education.
