Jordanian prisoners in Israel get visit
NEW YORK (JTA) -- Jordanians were permitted to visit family members imprisoned in Israel.
The visit by 37 Jordanians last week to a prison near Netanya was the third since Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994, according to a report Wednesday in the Jordan Times. The first was in 1999 and the second in 2006.
The Jordanians met with 17 prisoners.
Islamist opposition groups say Jordan's government is not doing enough to enable such visits. The opposition groups say more than 35 Jordanians are in Israeli jails; Jordan assesses the number at 20.
Many of the prisoners were caught in cross-border raids. Israel returned three such prisoners to Jordan earlier this year.
