Cantor elected minority whip

WASHINGTON (JTA)—The only Jewish Republican in the House has been elected to the second highest position in his party’s leadership.

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) won unanimous election as minority whip in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday after serving as chief deputy whip for the past six years. He succeeds Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), who stepped down from the post earlier this month.

Cantor, 45, will be the chief deputy to House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio).

He has been considered a rising star in the GOP since his election to the House in 2000. In recent days Cantor has criticized his party for offering principles instead of "real solutions" to problems.
