PrintEx-Israeli army chief joins Likud
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Moshe Ya’alon, a former Israeli army chief of general staff, is joining the Likud Party.
Ya’alon, who will make the announcement Tuesday, has denied that he demanded the position of defense minister in a potential Likud-led government following the Feb. 10 national elections.
The retired general is currently a senior distinguished fellow at the Shalem Center’s Adelson Institute for Strategic Studies in Jerusalem. Reportedly he has been considering entering politics for several weeks.
Two other retired army generals, Yossi Peled and Uzi Dayan, also are running with the Likud.
Meanwhile, veteran Likud member and former government minister Uzi Landau announced Monday that he will join the right-wing Israel Beiteinu Party as the No. 2 to Avigdor Lieberman. At a news conference in Tel Aviv, Landau called for a strong national camp and said he joined Israel Beiteinu in order to prevent territorial concessions.
