Cantor: Top contender for McCain VP?

The John McCain presidential campaign has asked Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to provide personal documents.

Cantor, the chief minority whip in the U.S. House of Representatives and that body’s only Jewish Republican, is a top contender for the vice president spot, according to news outlets such as CNN, Fox News, Politico and the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Cantor, 45, is a prominent Jewish Republican with a talent for fund raising, which he has used to help the McCain campaign in recent months.

Cantor’s addition to the McCain ticket is seen as attracting Jewish support in Florida and keeping Virginia as a red state in November’s general election. Cantor is a major congressional supporter of Israel.

Other GOP contenders for vice president listed by Politico include former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Rob Portman of Ohio, a former congressman, White House budget director and U.S. trade ambassador.

The Republican national convention is scheduled for Sept. 1-4.
