The Claims Conference was ordered to pay nearly $6 million to Holocaust survivors from the former Soviet Union.
A Tel Aviv District Court judge ruled Sunday that the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany did not inform 1,365 Holocaust survivors from the former Soviet Union who immigrated to Israel that they were entitled to a one-time restitution payment.
The survivors argued that the Claims Conference did not properly explain the conditions for applying for the grant, causing them to lose out on the restitution.
The grant had been offered to survivors who were not able to apply in the 1970s when the German government offered the compensation. Some 550 other claims by plaintiffs had expired, the court determined.
Claims Conference attorney Uri Keider intends to appeal the ruling, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported.
