Peres: Lebanon war would be ‘tragedy

Shimon Peres said it would be a “tragedy” if Lebanon reverted to civil war.

Violence this week between the Shiite terrorist group Hezbollah and government-backed Sunnis in Lebanon has claimed about a dozen lives and set off another crisis in Israel’s neighbor to the north.

“It’s not a total surprise,” the Israeli president said Friday of the violence in Lebanon. “We knew that Hezbollah is going to divide the country and lead it to the verge of a civil war.”

Such a war would be “a tragedy for them,” Peres said. “It’s a tragedy for all of us. And I hope that at the last moment they will save themselves from a bloody civil war.”
