Probe ordered on Holocaust survivors’ handling
A special commission of inquiry will investigate Israel’s handling of Holocaust survivors.
The Knesset State Committee, in a rare application of its oversight powers, on Monday set up a panel to
probe the Olmert government’s handling of hundreds of thousands of Holocaust survivors in Israel.
A scandal erupted last year when it emerged that many survivors were living on paltry state stipends, and despite Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s pledges of redress, compensation has been slow in coming.
“Every day, 40 Holocaust survivors pass away without having received what they deserved,” said Knesset State Committee chairman Zevulun Orlev. “They are fed up with promises.”
Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch will appoint a chair for the inquiry.
