Herzl grandson buried in Jerusalem

Theodor Herzl’s grandson was reburied in Jerusalem.

Stephen Theodore Norman, the only grandchild of the founder of modern Zionism, was laid to rest in Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl ceremony Wednesday after his remains were exhumed from their original burial place in Washington.

His mother, Herzl’s youngest daughter Trude Neumann, and father, Richard, perished in the Theresienstadt concentration camp during the Holocaust. Norman was working as a British diplomat in Washington in 1946 when he learned of his parents’ fate. Distraught, he committed suicide. He was 28.

Herzl’s two other children, Pauline and Hans, were reinterred next to him in Jerusalem last year. Norman was buried in the same plot.

Norman briefly visited Palestine in 1946 to observe the land where his grandfather envisaged the rebirth of Jewish sovereignty.

In an article about the visit, he described the young Zionists he met: “These children bore the mark of freedom. I thought of the dark, sallow, unhappy Jewish children of Europe. I had seen pictures of their faces; their youthful frames had borne the features of old men and women, and now I saw these little ones who look like children again.”
