PrintGerman lawmakers eye anti-Semitism panel
Some members of the German parliament are calling for a commission to investigate anti-Semitism in the country.
A group of legislators from the center-right Free Democratic Party suggested a multi-party panel look into the high volume of anti-Semitic crimes in Germany.
Markus Loening, the party’s speaker on European policy and head of its Berlin faction, said that such a commission could raise awareness on a local and national level, the German daily newspaper Tagesspiegel reported. Other parties have voiced support.
The newspaper said the idea was prompted by historian and Holocaust survivor Arno Lustiger, who requested an annual report on official efforts to combat anti-Semitism.
This year has seen several spectacular anti-Semitic incidents, including the stabbing of a rabbi in Frankfurt and vandalism at a Jewish kindergarten in Berlin.
