Financial woes force Schechter shutdown
A Schechter high school in New Jersey is closing.
The Metropolitan Schechter High School, a Conservative school in Teaneck with 140 students in grades nine to 12, ran into difficulty when a major benefactor dropped his funding this summer because of financial woes.
Despite an intense fund-raising drive, the school could not make up a $500,000 deficit, it announced last week. Classes had been scheduled to begin Sept. 4.
The school was formed in 2006 by a merger of the Schechter Regional High School, which was founded in Teaneck in ‘03, and the Solomon Schechter High School of New York in Manhattan. Both schools had suffered from sagging enrollments.
