European officials talking to Hamas

European Union security officials reportedly have been holding secret talks with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Representatives of three E.U. security agencies met with top officials of Hamas, Palestinian Authority representatives told The Jerusalem Post.

Western governments generally have been boycotting Hamas, a position supported by Israel. But in recent weeks there have been growing calls in Europe to engage with the group, which the United States and Israel regard as a terrorist organization.

Earlier this month, Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said Hamas’ existence was a fact and it should be integrated into the political process.
