The U.S. House of Representatives will consider legislation that would set up an international nuclear fuel bank. The legislation, proposed first by Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was referred by the committee to the full House on Wednesday. It is aimed at calling Iran’s bluff. The Islamic Republic claims it is enriching uranium for peaceful purposes, although U.N. weapons inspectors suspect that it is manufacturing a bomb. A nuclear fuel bank would funnel enriched uranium to nations that allow inspectors to certify that their intentions are peaceful. The international community has already made similar proposals to Iran. The legislation has the support of both parties as well as the White House.
