JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli military court sentenced a soldier to nine months in prison for torturing two Palestinian prisoners.

The soldier, identified as R., was sentenced in Jaffa on Tuesday after being convicted for administering electric shocks in the necks of prisoners who were handcuffed and blindfolded. The prisoners also were beaten, and the electric shocks were increased when they asked for the torture to stop.

The incidents, which occurred in October, were filmed on another soldier’s cell phone, Haaretz reported. The soldier who filmed the acts also was sentenced to prison.

Both men belonged to a unit set up for haredi Orthodox soldiers.

R., who was demoted in rank, apologized in court.

“I am sorry and embarrassed by these acts,” he said.
