Funeral services were held here today for Mrs. Lala Kaufman, a writer who was the eldest daughter of Sholem Aleichem, the great Yiddish author. Mrs. Kaufman, widow of Dr. Michael J. Kaufman, was 77.
The only one of Sholem Aleichem’s six children to follow a writer’s career, Mrs. Kaufman contributed about 2,000 short stories to the Jewish Daily Forward, the New York Yiddish daily, during the past 40 years. Born in Kiev, Mrs. Kaufman was educated in Russia and Switzerland and came to the United States with her husband in 1922. Her husband died in 1938.
