More than $1,000,000 was contributed today in advanced gifts to the United Jewish Appeal at a tri-state regional conference held at the William Penn hotel here, opening the Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and West Virginia phases of the 1951 U.J.A. campaign.
The advanced funds were presented to Dr. Dov Joseph, Israel’s Minister of Communications, who was also presented with the keys of the city of Pittsburgh by Mayor David L. Lawrence. Principal speakers included Dr. Dov Joseph; Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice-chairman of the U.J.A.; Eddie Cantor and others. More than 800 leaders of 75 communities participated in the gathering.
