Concluding a two-day tour of DP camps and Joint Distribution Committee centers in the Munich area, Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, JDC European director, said today that he was “impressed with the high spirit of the Jewish DP’s–even those who are in the sub-standard camps.”
“Of course, they would like to know more definitely about their future,” Dr. Schwartz added, “but they are at present full of enthusiasm. I am surprised at the small amount of griping. I expected a lot more.”
Dr. Schwartz also reported that in the older camps he found an “inspiring communal spirit,” in the kitchens, workshops and schools. He said he was also impressed by the universal gratitude and recognition accorded the program of the JDC, as well as its staff, by the DP’s.
