The resignation of Dr. Hermann Rauschning, president of the Nazi-controlled Free City Senate, coupled with the reversal of his moderate policy toward the Jews, was seen today as an ominous sign of what is in store for the Danzig Jews. Rauschning’s resignation was made public yesterday.
Dr. Rauschning has been on a leave of absence for some time, ostensibly because of ill health, but actually because the Danzig Nazis and, it was said, the Berlin regime have frowned on policies of conciliation pursued by the head of the Free City government.
He has now been replaced by Dr. M. Greiser, vice-president of the senate, under whose direction a vigorous anti-Jewish policy is being carried out. Works of Jewish writers have been removed from Danzig libraries and book stores. Jewish professionals are being discriminated against through the “Aryan paragraph.” Jewish artisans are finding it difficult to work at their trades.
While there have been no overt acts against the Jews, the Jewish quarter has frequently resounded with the cry “hang the Jews.”
Danzig Nazis were tremendously encouraged by the fact that in the election this year they received fourteen per cent. more votes than they did two years ago, when they captured the government.
